Accelerated Reading

Students unanimously agree that the AR Reading program is fabulous!  the Accelerated Reader Program is a software program that is designed to motivate students to read, boost enthusiasm for reading, and increase independent reading practice and comprehension.

How does the Accelerated Reader Program work?

1.  The student selets a book to read during Self Selected Reading time during school or at home.  Teachers will asist student sin choosing books that are at their independent reading level.  Books read at home for AR should be books that the student an read and understand comfortably on their own.

There are over 100,00 chioldren's books that have an AR quiz.  You may go to www.arbookfind.com to find out whether a book your child is reading has an AR quiz.

2.  The student takes a computerized quiz to check for understanding of the book on the NEO laptops at schoo.l  Students will be given the opportunity to take AR quizzes during Self Selectd Reading time in the classroom.

3.  The student and the teacher get immediate feedback.  If the student reaches the goal for comprehension, he/she earns points towards reahing AR Acknowldedement Levels.  If the student does not reach the goal for comprehension, then he/she rereads the book adn takes the quiz a second time.

AR Acknowledgement Levels

Students earn points when they take an AR quiz and reach the comprehension goal.  RDS keeps a record of the students' performance and accumulated points.  As students earn points they work to progress to the pewter acknowledgment leel, on the bronze, then to silver, next, god, and finally to platinum.  Many of the AR books for the elementary level have a .5 value, so to reach the pewter acknowledment level a student would read approximately 10 books and reach the AR quiz comprehension goal for each book.  Each month students who move to a new acknolwdgment level will be honored by posting their name at that level on the Accelerated Reader bulletin board and in the classroom newsletter.  There is also a monthly AR Assembly to acknowledge readers in front of their peers.
