The Reston Day School Oxford Tutorial

Oxford University, in Oxford, England (not far from Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare) is made up of over forty colleges.  Historically, the "Tutorial" has been the primary teaching format at Oxford.  A "Tutorial" consists of meetings between a "tutor" or a "don" and a very small number of students...usually one to three at a time.  The tutorial is an ongoing discussion between the tutor and students about whatever is being studied.  The tutor gives the assignments and there is much field work (research in the real world, field trips).

The Reston Day School Oxford Tutorial Program

The RDS Oxford Tutorial lends itself perfectly to teaching a multitude of skills including leadership skills in an environment that is constantly stimulating intellectually for every student.

*  Each student is tested at the beginning of the year to determine his or her academic level in the fundamental areas.   Students have  an individualized program developed so that they progress in each academic subject at their own rates of learning, not a pre-determined "grade" level.

*   We invite "guest" tutors from within our community of excellent and highly trained teachers, parents, nearby schools, universities, art galleries, museums, geographical or historical societies, etc.

What's Special About the RDS Oxford Tutorial:  The Horizontal Program and The Vertical Program

*  There is a "Horizontal" and a "Vertical" aspect to the tutorial program for each student:  The "Horizontal Program" includes traditional, every day, every week, every year, critical and important academic subjects including, but not limited to:  reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, grammar, art, music and sports.  Students attend their appropriate academic classes daily.

*   The "Vertical Program" is a series of quick, never longer than one month studies where the sky is the limit with regard to subjects covered. We study anything and everything including History, Anthropology, Archeology, Great Artists...always a new challenge!  The purpose of the vertical program is to keep the students' interest piqued at all times (they never know what is coming next!) and to put academic skills learned in the "horizontal program" to real world use!

The RDS Oxford Tutorial is designed for students with natural curiosity but who may be bored with traditional teaching or traditional classrooms; underachievers, average, or great students! We invite you to Reston Day School's Oxford Tutorial Program!
