Through a variety of creative educational programs, our JK classes emphasize skill development in all academic areas. Children engage in small and large group activities which foster teamwork and other developing social skills. Our teachers "move fast," implementing curriculum activities in a warm and loving environment to keep up with these eager and excited learners. Reading, Writing and Language: In our Junior Kindergarten classroom, we offer many different programs to build emerging reading and writing skills. Hooked on Phonics and other phonics programs used in conjunction with Whole Language practices, allow our students ample opportunities to develop and enjoy writing and reading skills. Our children publish books, play with inventive spelling, retell familiar tales, and learn spelling, reading, decoding and writing rules, all of which supports their future learning. We surround the students in a print rich environment, model great reading habits and exemplify varied and rich uses of language, including spanish! Math and Science: Through the use of exciting games and tools, we create learning opportunities in all areas of mathematics. One of the many programs we use is Mary Baratta-Lorton's Mathematics Their Way, as a guide for skills acquisition and development. Our Science program introduces students to real scientists past and present, many of the different fields of study,as well as the Scientific Method for documenting their own hands-on scientific investigations. Other Exciting Aspects of our Program: In our Junior Kindergarten Program children also explore music, movement, and theater. Each classroom participates in Community service projects. Each classroom has a Spanish teacher who introduces the Spanish Language and cultures and customs of Spanish speaking countries. Children also enjoy outdoor activities.
