For Our Parents: Some Helpful Pointers For Parting With Your Child

A parent dropping off a child at school for the first time can be a major upset for the child as well as for the parent.  Here are some suggestions to make parting on the first day (or any day) go a little better.

First and foremost, know that your child is tuned into your (the parent's) emotions and state of being.  If you remain calm and confident no matter how your child reacts, the child will notice how you are.  No matter how calm you are, your child may be upset.  This is normal and natural in this situation.  We are not trying to prevent the child's or the parent's upset, rather to facilitate recovery for both.  It is the parent and the teachers who must set the context for the child.

Don't stay too long in the classroom the first week or so.  You are very welcome to go to the office where  you are out of sight and wait for your child to settle in.

If the child is reluctant to let go of you, be patient and let the teacher or assistant gently assist him/her into the classroom, then smile and GO!

No matter what, bring him/her back the next day.

Be positive and encouraging and upbeat!  Don't emphasize how much you'll miss them; emphasize "I love you, see you soon..."

Make sure they now that you will pick them up when school is over.  We request that you bring them and pick them up on time, on a regular schedule if possible.

Be patient and trust the teachers.

If you are overly distressed, go to the office and talk with the Director or Assistant Director until you relax a little.

Once you leave the center, please feel free to call the center as often as you like to check on your child's progress!
